EAST CHICAGO | A Calumet City firm has been selected for infrastructure work on the massive North Harbor revitalization project.

Hasse Construction Co. beat out four other contenders with a $3.2 million bid to replace water lines and sewers, and rebuild streets and sidewalks on a four-block area centered around Main Street and Broadway.

Work is scheduled to begin later this month to return Main Street to two-way traffic with parallel parking and expansive, 12-foot pedestrian walkways in what was once the retail center of Indiana Harbor.

Hispanic Housing Development Corp. of Chicago, San Francisco-based EDAW, Inc. and nationally acclaimed, Boston-based Community Builders, Inc. are working with the city to build 40 single-family homes and 80 rental units on some 34 city-owned lots in the project's first phase.

The reconstruction work is scheduled for a May completion, with a second phase -- rebuilding Broadway between Fir and Pulaski Streets -- to be finished in November.

In 2008, Main Street reconstruction is planned north to Michigan Avenue and south to Columbus Drive.
