Calumet City firm chosen to build Hammond sports fields

HAMMOND | A Calumet City firm was selected last week to build a new sports center on Hammond's southeast side.

Hasse Construction Co. beat out nine other contenders with a low bid of $1.6 million for work on the Caldwell Youth Sports Complex at 173rd Street and Parrish Avenue.

Plans call for three ball fields -- one baseball, one softball and one multipurpose space that can be configured for different games -- and a state-of-the-art playground area for younger children at the site of the former Caldwell Elementary School, which was demolished last year.

Parking areas, lighting for night games, permanent concession stands and a press box are included in preliminary plans for the complex. - BY STEVE ZABROSKI, TIMES CORRESPONDENT
